

As the city of New London expands and coal supplies dwindle, oil is “expected to be the new salvation of what’s left of humanity.” But not everyone in the new world agrees, and the 30-second trailer uses part of the previous teaser to show how the search for oil can have deadly consequences. It looks like Frostpunk 2 will be less about burning coal and wood and more about burning oil. Survivors had to band together to search for coal and wood to burn as well as steel to build up industry so that humanity could survive the long winter. The game puts players in control of a post-apocalyptic city that’s trying to survive the freezing temperatures brought on by a volcanic winter.


The original Frostpunk was a runaway success for Warsaw-based 11 Bit Studios, selling 1.4 million copies in its first year. As promised in the teaser video from last June, today’s announcement reveals one of the three games that 11 Bit is currently working on, and Frostpunk 2 is perhaps the least surprising of them all. I just went with the tiles and the wooden meeples/resources. Personally, I don't see the point in the minis. If you're interested, it's on preorder right now. I was just running the roles myself, but it does have some roles and character cards to make quarterbacking harder. I usually prefer my worker placement games (especially solo ones) to have minimal upkeep each round. I also found the procedures a bit tiresome, but that may have been because I was on TTS. They also have something kind of like endless mode. The board game technically has enough luck that replayability is possible, but that's a blessing and a curse.

Especially since the videogame is more like a puzzle - you can figure out how to beat a scenario, and once beat you don't usually come back to it. I think that the difficulty was a little to high on normal for how much randomness is in the game. It had some rough edges, but it was an impressive, modern design. I played a version on TTS while it was still on Kickstarter. There are a ton of cards to represent events, tech, expeditions, and all that. But I think that's part of the streamlining.

There's no steel in the game, just wood, coal, and steamcores. Same goes for workers, but it comes with the wood ones. Option for miniatures of all the buildings, screen printed wooden versions, or tiles. Same artwork but specifically redone for the board game.

It includes updated versions of the videogame scenarios (coupled with the bits of randomness, you're not just playing the same story as you did in the PC game) as well as some wholly new ones. The dev team is heavily involved just as they were with the This War of Mine game. In the meantime, for those who don't know, there is a board game coming out later this year / early next year.
